Schewels Customer Service: Commitment from Generation to Generation
Schewels’ customer service was borne out of a heritage of filial commitment. Schewel Furniture Company was originated in 1897, when Lithuanian immigrant Elias Schewel became Lynchburg, Virginia’s lone rabbinical scholar and teacher. Because the town’s Hebrew community comprised a very small faction, Rabbi Schewel took to peddling cane-bottom chairs, picture frames, and other small furniture items and knickknacks out of a horse-drawn wagon to supplement his meager income.
As more and more townsfolk flocked to his mobile furnishing store, the Rabbi’s business flourished. In the same year, he relocated to a building along 12th and Main Street, and from there sold his wares with the trade name Schewel Furniture Company, or Schewels for short.
Schewels took customer service seriously from day one – this consistent focus on customer satisfaction, coupled with an inherent sensibility in business practices, continue to serve as the building blocks for the company’s philosophy today. As ownership and operation of the Schewel Furniture Company was passed on from generation to generation – from Rabbi Schewel to his sons Abe, Ben, and Ike, to Abe’s son Elliott and Ben’s son Bert, and finally to Bert’s three children Marc, Jack, and Donna, Schewels’ crowd-pleasing formula remains.
